Atmos. Sci., 33, by wave-CISK. The calculated growth rates indicate that this result is basically insensitive to the vertical heating. The linear boundary layer solution which includes the effect of temporal acceleration is used to parameterize the CISK (Conditional Instability of the Second Kind) mechanism of tropical waves.

It was noted previously that jet streaks often play a significant role in extratropical cyclogenesis. In fact, there is evidence suggesting that jet streaks are an integral part of the upper-tropospheric baroclinic wave associated with cyclogenesis and of a dynamical process known as ‘downstream development’, which accounts for the growth and decay of many such waves.

While CISK became a highly influential theory, it made predictions that were inconsistent with observations and did not address the fact that even liberal estimates of moist available potential energy stored in the tropical atmosphere implied very modest peak wind speeds, as pointed out earlier by, for example, Riehl ().Cited by: However, his growth rate versus wavelength relation was not much different from that of Hayashi [].

Chang and Piwowar [] used linearized primitive equations on an equatorial fi plane, having a simplified thermodynamic equation but including a time-dependent boundary layer, to investigate the Cisk on tropical wave growth.

It covers remote sensing, atmospheric physics and chemistry, and the impact of aircraft emissions on atmospheric composition, as well as traditional topics like typhoons, rainstorms, monsoons and climate. Despite significant, steady improvements in the skill of medium-range weather prediction systems over the past several decades, the accuracy of these forecasts are occasionally very poor.

These forecast failures are referred to as “busts” or “dropouts&rdquo. The lack of a clear explanation for bust events limits the development and implementation of strategies Author: David B.

The Madden‐Julian oscillation (MJO) is a large‐scale (O(10, km)), zonally oriented tropical convective disturbance that propagates east at about 5 m s −1 with a period of 30–70 days or an “intraseasonal” time scale [Madden and Julian, ].The circulation anomalies are most prominent in zonal wind, where low‐level anomalies are out of phase with those at Cited by: Lander, M.
